Breaking the Rules

BREAKING THE RULES

"We all make rules for ourselves. It's these rules that help define who we are. So, when we break those rules, we risk losing our selves and becoming something unknown."
                       Dexter Morgan

In my own way I have created a space where there are no rules but love for art and fornication. Found artifacts and fancifully chaotic pieces stand in an area filled with the runnings of rabbits. Providing shade and suitable space for underground warrens, my backyard bunny garden called, BunnytownUSA is a monument to breaking the rules and a cheer for 'outsider artists' of all makes and models.

In truth, I began my own personal journey of Breaking the Rules began when I broke out of my mother's womb very prematurely. Shooting out a light bulb at the A&P with a slingshot, lighting matchboxes on fire in the carpool zone, shooting lizards and sparrows with bb's all went down as deeds of the miscreant who was to become a member of two Honor Councils, a teacher, an Administrator, and generally speaking a rule enforcer.

It was straight out of College, where I successfully avoided the Draft Lottery and received Honors in English at a school where smart folks wore black academic gowns to class, when I became an enforcer of rules as Dean of Students in a large North Florida preparatory school. No light-colored socks, no sideburns or long hair, no drinking alcohol or smoking evil weed on campus. I even for a time lived in that school's dormitory where my duties as enforcer of the rules got extended to 24-7 status.

I had a cat then, named Dorian. No one could smell anything other than kitty litter in that closet where I often enjoyed late night smokes, myself breaking the rules I was set out to enforce. And my most fun memory as 'Dean of Students' was that night the other Dean and I set up Cherry bombs with cigarette fuses to pop off across campus while we watched from a tall tower that used be part of the Flagler Hotel system now a school campus. The security guard, a hefty Irishman named Carney, ran from spot to spot where the Cherries bombed and from that tower no one was allowed to enter, we had a good laugh.

I voted for Nixon back in the day. Maybe that was a last toast to my parents. Even Neil Young liked Ronald Rayguns at one time. My lone vote for Tricky was the last time I knelt to the elephants in the room. I was a 'Poet for Peace' and spoke against many. Now I listen to the words of Steve Earle which sadly ring true…"I remember when we was both out on the boulevard/ Talkin' revolution and singin' the blues/ Nowadays it's letters to the editor and cheatin' on our taxes/Is the best that we can do" .

Breaking the rules got me caught once for shop lifting a 98 cent Rolling Writer pen in Tacoma, Washington where I had moved in order to never teach again but rather to become a famous second to my hero, Raymond Carver or a third to his wife, Tess. My penchant for breaking the rules led to my many writerly pursuits being flat out rejected. My rule-breaking success at publication has been let's just say, bereft.

When my wife and I bought a wrecked house in a dark neighborhood, we broke the rules and became pioneers in our 'hood. It was many years ago, that I created our contribution to "One per cent for the Arts" in our rundown neighborhood. It became a beacon of light complete with art and rabbits.

Even now I am breaking the rules at BunnytownUSA as our creative brethren number more than fifteen. Until homes can be found for the many little lagomorphs, that's the way it goes.  My freak flag still flies. Who knows, maybe I'll grow a beard. Let my thinning hair grow out a bit. For now, it's time to feed the rabbit hoards.

BALLOON OVER BUNNYTOWN

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is known the world over as the largest gathering of Hot Air Balloons anywhere...It always takes place the first two weeks of October when New Mexico is at its most beautiful. Each of those two weekends, provide startling mass ascensions along with daily activities in the early morning and at sunset during the week. It is in the cool of autumn mornings that the "Albuquerque Box" best works allowing for balloonists to take off in one spot, float silently eastward toward the Sandia Mountains, and be gently brought back to the same area that the took off from for safe landings.

However there are companies that offer balloon rides year round as well such as Rainbow Ryders of Albuquerque.  On a recent June morning the unmistakable sound of gas being shot up into the envelope of a passing balloon woke me and our Schipperkes up...The balloon seemed to be lower than usual as it passed over BunnytownUSA and in fact, ended up landing a block away in the midst of our neighborhood.

Here are some photographs of the fun and surprising event...

Hot Air Balloon touches down at St. Francis Xavier Church.

Hot Air Balloons open their tops to let out hot air on landing.

Soon to open the traditional bottle of a.m. champagne,
the crew and passengers will soon celebrate a soft landing.

FRESH First Week of Summer CHAOS

Artwork: Americana by Neil Young and Crazy Horse

NEIL YOUNG"S much anticipated new cd, AMERICANA was released this week. As a life long Neil fanatic, I must say I am impressed with this cd now available at Amazon for a mere $9.99. He takes eleven classic folkie tunes like Tom Dooley (Dula), Oh Susannah, Clementine, Wayfarin' Stranger, ending with God Save the Queen (timely)...and turns them into electric guitar feats of grandeur with the avid help of Crazy Horse at full swing. Well worth the price of admission.

Gorgeous sky blue sky day here in Albuquerque depsite huge forest fires all around...Where's the smoke going anyway...?

TGIF: the big question for the weekend along with will our entire state burn down is Will A Triple Crown Winner be announced at Belmont?

I think I'll have another as I sort out this news JUST IN...NO TRIPLE CROWN WINNER this time around.

BunnytownUSA is a part of this weekend's COOP TOUR 2012...Despite having ZERO chickens, we have been deemed of interest for our bunny poop composting abilities and 'cuz who doesn't LOVE BUNNIES!?...On Saturday, the Tour hits chicken coops located North of Central Avenue (Route 66) ; on Sunday, the Tour moves South of Central...We are on the Sunday Sunday Sunday Tour...Click link for Google Map of Sunday's version of the   ABQ COOP TOUR 2012...Now to clean up our yard's canine POOP for the COOP tour aficionados.

Altered States

Harvard scientist Eddie Jessup's (William Hurt) mind-altering experiments on himself, involving a hallucinatory drug and an isolation chamber, get out of control when his handiwork shuttles him back and forth on the evolutionary spectrum -- from human to ape-man. Equal parts sci-fi actioner, 1960s psychedelic trip and farce, the film was based on a Paddy Chayefsky novel and received Oscar nominations for music and sound. Blair Brown co-stars.

This week marked my fourth weekly 'float tank session' at a new place in Nob hill...After I get the salt outta my ears I am going to enjoy my new 'mellow' from hours and a half spent in the solitude of myself. I now have four sessions under my belt and I am going to take a break for a time and maybe watch that old movie called Altered States....Its been another one of my back to the eighties things...(my early days in ABQ 1985-ish)...you float in salt water in total darkness for 60-90 minutes...in old days they played music...now silence...a complete sensory shutdown.

It will be interesting to see if today's xyz generation of smart-phoners and 24-7 pluggged inners embrace the float tank idea of nothingness...Hats off to Albuquerque's new Float/Massage Center called, Enlighten Others .

Regardless of your opinion on the OCCUPY movement, this latest speech by Michael Moore (love him or hate him) is a very full take on today's xyz generation of protestationers. Have a cup or two of java and check out the video of entire speech entitled, Unrigging The System as seen on LinkTV  . If you enjoy PBS you might enjoy the programming of Link TV. It comes pretty much commercial free and swings left of center by a large margin.

My wife and I celebrate 25 years of legal marital bliss this week…Here we are seen on our roof top at 201 Princeton S.E., Albuquerque,New Mexico, tying the knot with officiator Isleta Pueblo Tribal Medicine woman, Pat Jojola. Pat's good works that afternoon have done well for our 25 years since.

Oddly, we could not get either a representative from the Roman Catholic nor Jewish faith to marry us. In 2008, I became a legalized 'clergy member' myself and have happily performed a wedding ceremony at BunnytownUSA for a sweet couple…Our theater, the AirDance ArtSpace has also been the sight of several weddings…Keep me and us in mind for your holy of holiest of days!

Wallow Fire as seen at BunnytownUSA (Albuquerque)

I shot these undoctored photographs moments ago out in our Albuquerque, New Mexico backyard where we have BunnytownUSA...They are of the sun dropping toward sunset which will become rapidly invisible due to the approaching smoke coming to us from the Wallow Fire in Arizona. For the past several days we have been inundated with seriously thick smoke especially as the day ends and the air changes over into night patterns.

Pictures taken on 6/6/11 at 6:36 p.m. Mountain time.

Where pumpkins go to die...

This year we grew our own pumpkins and the rabbits of BunnytownUSA loved them...Much preferred to the store-bought ones...

Bunnytown Twilight

It is not often I drag the old laptop out to our patio overlooking BunnytownUSA but as the sun sinks below the westside mesas tonight, I am enjoying a moment with the bunnies under cool pre-starry skies on a Friday night.

Last night in Santa Fe Old Man Gloom burned in a festive ceremony to burn away the entire year's gloom. Ironically a gas fire in San Bruno California exploded out of control at the same time. News people are saying that America is in a Patch and Pray mode these days with infrastructures of highways, bridges, and structures all at the do we patch em or pray for em stage of things.

At this slow turn of the seasons, leaves have begun to fall and the light of day peters out at a faster pace. Last night too, our first Burning of Gloom NFL style took place with the Saints beating up on the Vikings. North America spends more on war and football than anything else. Fun to watch on teevee. Bring Peace Home. Burning books never solved anything.

Nine One One 2001-2010

Under now-lit solar lighting overhead, the stars and stripes blow in the gentle New Mexican breeze and bunnies eat alfalfa pellets. Soon los conejos will poop 'em out and eat 'em again and poop some more, leaving behind almost pure non-smelling lightweight balls of chlorophyl poopie pellets that neighborhhood gardens will prosper from next spring. Life and death never cease. Seasons change. We may all die in 2012 or sooner; or later.

The only constant at BunnytownUSA is change. Rabbits deal with change in every moment of their lives. The natural world is an ocean of change. Prospering in times and dying in times, re-cycling is so much more than a paper or plastic decision. For many years, I could not fly the American flag over my creation of outsider art and rabbits. The flag flies proudly now and my days of moaning about the antics of life with 'W' have eased off the nanic gas pedal. My cyber child, and FRESHCHAOS.com sits quietly in cyberspace now with a full ten years of reminders of how it was before we moved into whatever the holy Hector's housecat of a world we have today.

There are Friday nights like tonight when I just need to make that connection with rabbits and earth and clear sky and sit back in my porch chair on top of this world that is so quickly turning. Behind me the golden crescent of a new moon flies below sharply sparkling Venus and I know that I have made it through another dark side of the moon. Thanks for joining me...

Happy Weekend...
Here's a spanking new web Gallery of BunnytownUSA as seen 09/09/2010.
