Perseids:Harbingers of a New Season

I saw my first one streak west over South Broadway's city night sky and knew it would be a good night for the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. At my favorite spot south of Albuquerque, the shower of silent 'stars' was a refreshing moment which carried me past the midway point of summertime.

Though 'light pollution' encroaches from Belen/Los Lunas into our own Big City light, the Milky way was cooly lit and many of the night's meteor streaks seemed to spring from it or dart through it. I love the slight smell of dew on the grasses out in the high desert at 3 a.m. It reminds this Native Floridian of the smell of sea oats perhaps harkening back to the ancient ocean floors we live on here.

And yes, there slowly rising in the east was my favorite old-man-hunter, Orion, making for me his first visit into my night sky horizons. It was not cold enough for a coat or jacket but, ever so soon, it will be. Enjoyed the Perseids this bright night sky morning of Friday the 13th, 2010. It was most certainly worth a hop out of my comfy bed to go view. Weather permitting they should be visible again tonight (Friday). Maybe I'll head east this time, or just roll over and go back to sleep.
