A Satisfied Mind

Last night, I went to bed early for a Saturday night and this morning just before dawn had a long dream. In this dream, I met Tom Petty's man in the room at the top of the world. A guy like , Richie Rich or even a Michael Jackson. A man who had everything but a satisfied mind.

This man was giving tours of his home at the top of the world when he spoke with me and I with him...He showed me his fingers where he had pulled out his cuticles in self-blame and criticism. He said it was from an accident that there were holes in his fingers where his cuticles should have been...This man had everything but a satisfied mind.

I liked this man, I introduce him to my wife in the dream...When she gazed at his empty flesh where his cuticles should have been, she had to look away from his deepest pain. He and I though somehow shared the reality of his pain. He and I were somehow the same in this dream .

We are both only just now beginning to finally learn the true meaning if this old and well-worn song called, "A Satisfied Mind":

"How many times have you heard someone say
If I had his money, I would do things my way
But little they know, that it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten with a satisfied mind

Money can't buy back your youth when you're old
Friend when you're lonely, oh peace to your soul
The wealthiest person is a pauper at times
Compared to the man with a satisfied mind

My life is over and my time has run out
My friends and my loved ones, I'll leave these no doubt
One things for certain, when it comes my time
I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind"

[Songwriters: Red Hayes; Jack Rhodes]

  1. I love that song, especially the version by The Five Blind Boys of Alabama. Thankfully, I was raised by a sighted man from Alabama, who lacked monetary riches, but most assuredly had a satisfied mind. A rare and wonderful possession.

  2. I am happy to have known that man (you, too.)
